Victoria became the first State in the world to introduce the compulsory wearing of seatbelts; the first of a series of radical measures that saw Victoria's road toll fall from more than 1000 fatalities per annum in 1970 to approximately 400 per annum since the early 1990's.

Introduction of 24 hour emergency phone services on metropolitan freeways.
1976
Random roadside breath testing (RBT) introduced. This was another first for Australia. Records on driver/rider death found that 49% of all those killed had a blood alcohol concentration over .05%.
1980
CRB commissioned a computer controlled traffic signal system in Melbourne (SCRAM).
2002
David Anderson appointed as Chairman and Chief Executive of VicRoads.
2008
The completion of EastLink, comprising the outer section of the Eastern Freeway and Scoresby Freeway. Melbourne's second fully electronic toll road.
